The Media Council is a group of responsible media organisations and public-spirited individuals whose role overall is to promote and encourage quality journalism. Of the current 14 members, seven are media companies and seven are private individuals. All members have equal voting rights.

The Council has the respect and support of every major media organisation in the Fiji Island and enjoys close links with media associations around the Pacific and throughout the world.

It plays a particularly prominent role in safeguarding the freedom of our press and broadcast media.

The Fiji Islands public has a right to accurate information and fair reporting, and the Council champions thats right.

In the main, its activities are funded by the local media industry itself, supplemented where necessary by assistance from other sources.

Objectives

  • To promote high journalistic standards.
  • To enhance the media's image
  • To safeguard the media's independence
  • To uphold freedom of speech and expression.
  • To uphold the public's right to be informed accurately and fairly.
  • To promote and independent and effective Complaints Committee.
  • To promote a Code of Ethics and Practice for journalists and medcia organisations.

The Media Council's General Media Code of Ethics and Practice fulfills an important role in raising journalistic standards, and every working journalist in the Fiji Islands has been provided with a copy.
